Our History

In 1968, our church was founded as the First Baptist Church of Bouquet Canyon. It had its beginnings in the living room of Galen and Christine Baldwin on Garza Street in Saugus (now a postal district within the City of Santa Clarita). Here a small group met for Bible study and prayer under the leadership of Rev. Don Puerling. Pastor Puerling had the original vision for an American Baptist church in this new and growing area of Los Angeles County.

Two years later the church officially incorporated in order to license one of its laymen, Charles Babcock, to the Christian ministry. At this time the church was meeting in the multipurpose room at Rosedell Elementary school.

Property along Bouquet Canyon was purchased by the American Baptist Churches of the Pacific Southwest and in 1972 the present facility was dedicated to the Lord. In the mid '70's, our name was shortened to Bouquet Baptist Church.

On May 4th, 1997, in response to the prompting of the Holy Spirit and in recognition of His mighty renewing and restoring presence with us, the name was again changed, this time to New Wine Christian Center.

We remain affiliated with the American Baptist denomination, and as such belong to the southwestern region known as the ABC/PSW which includes 269 other churches in southern California, southern Nevada, Arizona, Baja and Hawaii. Our national headquarters are in Valley Forge, PA.
